Six winners have been named in the Downers Grove Downtown Management Corporation's fourth annual Gingerbread Contest. Voting for the contest was held during the corporation's Gingerbread Festival, held Nov. 23-25 in downtown Downers Grove. More than 600 votes were cast, officials said. Of the contest's 23 participants, Viewers' Choice and Elves' Choice winners were named in three categories: Family/Individual/Children, Professional and Culinary Student. The winners each received $50 in downtown Downers Grove gift certificates. All gingerbread houses will remain on display through Saturday, Dec. 22. With the holiday season in full swing, what's better than a good, old-fashioned tree lighting ceremony? Downers Grove kicked off its holiday festivities Nov. 23 with the start of its second annual Gingerbread Festival, hosted by the Downers Grove Downtown Management Corporation. Santa Claus and Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully hit the switch on the village's tree that afternoon, marking the official start of a weekend packed with holiday activities—including a storybook reading at the library, breakfast with Santa, a middle school play and complimentary carriage rides. Gingerbread men, a holiday procession and Santa signal the start of the holiday season in Downers Grove.
"Three! Two! One! Light the tree!" And just like that, it was the holiday season in Downers Grove. Hundreds of residents braved the cold weather Friday for the kickoff of the 2012 Gingerbread Festival, hosted by the Downers Grove Downtown Management Corporation. Santa Claus and Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully hit the switch on the village's tree Friday afternoon, marking the official start of a weekend packed with holiday activities—including a storybook reading at the library, breakfast with Santa, a middle school play and complimentary carriage rides. Mom and pop businesses will get their chance to shine on Small Business Saturday, which is on Nov. 24. The Downtown Downers Grove Management Corporation is seeking entries for its fourth annual gingerbread house contest. The Gingerbread Festival will be held Nov. 23-25 in downtown Downers Grove. Gingerbread houses will be on display at several participating merchants. Entries are welcome in three divisions: Family/Individual/Children, Professional and Culinary Student. A "Viewers' Choice" and "Elves' Choice" will be selected after a weekend of voting; winners will receive $50 in downtown Downers Grove gift certificates.
