Downers Grove South takes on Hinsdale South in the annual event, which raises money for breast cancer research.
The Downers Grove South girls basketball teams will "Shoot for a Cure" against Hinsdale South Friday night. The varsity game starts at 7:30 p.m. at DGS. The sophomore and freshmen B teams play at 6 p.m. and the freshmen A team plays at 4:30 p.m. The game should be a good match-up. In the last meeting of the two varsity teams, Hinsdale South pulled out a win in the final seconds. "Shoot for a Cure" combines basketball and fundraising and awareness for breast cancer research. The annual event was inspired by Kay Yow, head woman's basketball coach at North Carolina State University for 34 years. Yow is the third coach in women’s Division I history to coach more than 1,000 games at the same school, and one of six to achieve 700 career …

DGS girls basketball squad improves to 5-0 with home win over Addison Trail.
With eight players returning from last year’s 16-11 squad, the Downers Grove South girls basketball team had definite potential. Would it translate into success? The answer to that question so far is a resounding yes. The Mustangs improved to 5-0 by knocking off visiting Addison Trail 63-42 Tuesday night in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division opener for both teams. Junior center Kirsten Zemke and senior guard/forward Sarrah Ludwig each scored 19 points, while senior forward Alison Dec added 13 points and six assists to lead Downers South, which won the Lyons Township Thanksgiving Tournament last week. The hot start surprised the Mustangs, who graduated both of their starting guards but haven’t missed a beat. “I was kind of surprised…

Hinsdale South 51, Downers Grove South 34: Center's 13 points, 11 rebounds key great defensive effort as the Hornets win on an emotional Senior Night.
Hinsdale South center Uzo Okoro was held to just four points when the Hornets lost 42-40 at Downers Grove South back on Jan. 10. It was a much different story Thursday night. The 6-foot Okoro dominated at both ends of the floor, leading all players with 13 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks as host Hinsdale South exacted revenge with a 51-34 drubbing of the Mustangs on Senior Night in Darien. The win solidified the Hornets’ grip on second place in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division. Hinsdale South (12-9, 7-2) has a two-game lead in the loss column over the Mustangs (13-9, 6-4), who have lost five straight games. “I think we prepared a lot better this time,” Okoro said. “We knew what to expect and I think we had a lot more intensity…

Pirates run away from Mustangs, take two-game lead in West Suburban Gold race.
When a team has more turnovers than points and can count the number of baskets it scores on one hand, chances are the result was not a happy one. That was the case for the Downers Grove South girls basketball team Wednesday night. The Mustangs committed 33 turnovers and made only five baskets, including one in the second half, in losing to Proviso East 51-27 in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division game in Downers Grove. Proviso East (19-2, 8-0), which has won the last six conference championships, now is firmly in the driver’s seat in the league race. The Pirates have a two-game lead over the Mustangs (13-6, 6-2), who they swept this year, and Hinsdale South (10-9, 5-2) with four games remaining. “We still have four more to go,” …

Franklin's late steal seals the deal for Downers Grove South in key WSC Gold Division girls basketball victory.
In a game filled with big defensive plays, Downers Grove South’s Tori Franklin had the most important one. With the game tied at 38-38, Franklin stripped Hinsdale South point guard Toni Romiti in the Hornets’ backcourt, scrambled for the loose ball and while lying on her back managed to get a pass to teammate Allison Dec. Dec went in for a layup with 1:09 remaining and the Mustangs held on for a 42-40 victory Monday night in Downers Grove to retain sole possession of second place in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division. “It was really close the whole game and I knew I could steal it; I’m just good at that,” Franklin said. “(Earlier in the game) I fouled, so I was a little hesitant, but I just tried and I got it and luckily Allison …

Carly Saraceno scores 12 points as Mustangs survive on road without their 'A' game.
Neither side put on its Sunday best performance as Morton played host to Downers Grove South in a West Suburban Conference Gold girls basketball matchup on Tuesday night. Downers South defeated Morton in a low-scoring affair 33-26. The Mustangs (7-3, 3-1) took advantage of Morton in the turnover battle, even though both teams had trouble holding on to the ball. Morton finished with 31 turnovers. Although Downers South was not on top of its game, senior guard Carly Saraceno scored 12 points; one-third of the Mustangs' total. “We held up a fight,” Saraceno said. “I’m happy we won, but we played down to their level. Our goal is to be conference champs. There are some tough people in conference, and if we keep playing like this we won’t meet …

Carly Saraceno leads the Mustangs with 14 points and six steals in a 53-29 victory over Leyden.
The Downers Grove South girls basketball team did not disappoint in its home opener, which also happened to be teacher appreciation night. It did take the Mustangs a while to get it going, though. The final effort, however, certainly pleased the teachers as well as the rest of the crowd as South routed Leyden 53-29 on Tuesday thanks to a defense that forced 21 steals. The Mustangs (5-3, 2-1) got off to a slow start, missing several early opportunities from the field and the free throw line. Senior Carly Saraceno led the way with seven first-half points and three steals. She turned two of her steals into four points on fast-break opportunities. The Eagles (1-6, 0-4) kept pace with three 3-point field goals and six first-half points from …

The Trojans shot 22 of 26 for the game, and 12 of 14 in the fourth quarter en route to winning their fifth game of the season.
Why do the Downers North's girls basketball team, in general, and Katie Hunzinger, in particular, rarely miss from the free-throw line? Well, having to run extra after practice if the Trojans don't make their free throws during practice has a lot to do with it. And needless to say, neither Hunzinger—who nailed 9 of 9 during the Trojans' 51-46 West Suburban Silver victory over York Saturday afternoon—nor her teammates want any part of that. "We probably take about 50 free throws in practice and we do a lot of one-and-one situations," Hunzinger said. "If we miss them, we have to run. So you kind of learn to make them." The Trojans' sizzling totals from the foul line—they were 22 of 26 for the game, and 12 of 14 in the fourth quarter—proved …
