A Patch Visit to the Ryder Cup 2012

Some thoughts on the stunning Sunday European comeback and reflections on a visit to Medinah Country Club, the Chicagoland host of the major tournament.

Justin Rose appears to like Chicagoland golf courses. Specifically, he appears to like long birdies on the 17th greens of Rees Jones-remodeled Chicagoland golf courses on Sunday afternoons. Even more specifically, he seems to like crushing my dreams with long birdies on the 17th greens of Rees Jones-remodeled Chicagoland golf courses on Sunday afternoons. There were many daggers that doomed the United States team to a painful, historic Ryder Cup collapse as they somehow threw away a four-point lead at Medinah on Sunday. Adopted Chicagoan Luke Donald, playing for his British homeland, gritted out an impressive win over Bubba Watson for early momentum. Burgeoning choke artist Jim Furyk handed his match to Sergio Garcia with two bunkers and a…

Neuqua Valley Defeats Benet for Third on Tiebreaker at Fenton

The Neuqua Valley boys golf team turned back fellow local boys golf power Benet for third place at the 29-team Fenton Invitational on Saturday morning in Bensenville.

Ian Nebendahl had a dream start at the 43rd Fenton Invitational on Saturday morning in Bensenville. The Neuqua Valley fifth man began his round of the 29-team boys golf tournament at White Pines Golf Club with a par. But then his outward nine really became interesting. “I came out pretty fast out of the gate,” Nebendahl said. Nebendahl had three consecutive birdies and rode his sizzling start to lead the Wildcats to third place in the team standings with his low round of 4-over-par 74. Neuqua Valley and Benet were tied for third place with team scores of 310, but Nick Roaches’ 79 proved to be the tiebreaker for the Wildcats. The Nebendahl start was indicative of a team-wide opening nine holes for the Wildcats on the par-70 layout. “We were…

Kristin McCann: Getting In The Swing Of Summer

Local golf options make it easy and fun for kids to play the game.

In the quest to find at least one sport my daughter would like, we stumbled across golf.  I’ve never even picked up a club and my husband plays periodically, but we thought it might be something she would like. And we were right. A small set of kid’s golf clubs from Play It Again Sports, in pink, seemed like a reasonable investment. After two sets of lessons, I am happy to report she really does like it and would like to take more lessons. In other words, she would rather take golf than have me try to find another sport she might like. I really don’t mind that the underlying motivators are that she doesn’t have to run a lot and the chances of getting hit in the face with the ball (like she did on the first day of soccer) are fairly low. …

Redwings, Trojans' Mahoney Fall Short at Girls Golf Sectional

New Trier wins team title; Glenbard West's Kochevar is the tourney's medalist with a 71.

OAK BROOK -- Benet Academy girls golf coach Tony LaScala was hoping that the Redwings' familiarity with Willow Crest Golf Club—site of Monday's Nazareth Sectional—would work to his team's advantage. The Redwings played the course last Wednesday as part of the York Regional and took second as a team with a score of 359. In addition, they shot two practice rounds on it in recent days. On Monday, Benet shaved three strokes off last week's score. But in a field loaded with perennial heavyweights such as New Trier, Loyola Academy, Wheaton Warrenville South and Lyons Township, the Redwings' 356 landed them in eighth place. New Trier (311), LT (324) and Loyola (326) each qualified for this weekend's Class AA state tourney at Hickory Point Golf …

Downers Grove North's Mahoney Comes Up Just Short in Bid for Medalist Honors

Lyons Township junior Katie Ellis edges Trojans' ace in playoff, leads Lions to regional title at Willow Crest.

OAK BROOK -- It took 19 holes to determine an individual champion in the Class AA York girls golf regional at Willow Crest on Wednesday. And 19 wasn't a good number for Downers Grove North senior Colleen Mahoney. She went into a one-hole playoff with Lyons Township junior Katie Ellis feeling like it was her time to shine. Mahoney matched Ellis shot-for-shot as both carded rounds of 80 in regulation play. Mahoney, though,  put herself in a bind with an errant tee shot that dribbled up the fairway about 10 yards from the tee box. She recovered with a solid second shot, but it wasn't enough. Ellis won the playoff with a bogey-5 and punched her ticket into Monday's sectional. "I couldn't believe how bad that tee shot was," Mahoney said. "For (…

Downers Grove North's Mahoney Shooting for State Again

Trojans' senior golfer looks to put the finishing touches on a brilliant high school career.

Many believe the color purple is uplifting and calming to the mind and nerves. It certainly has had that effect on Downers Grove North senior golfer Colleen Mahoney ever since she first donned the Trojans purple and white colors. Mahoney had never broken 100 in a round of golf prior to enrolling in high school, but during tryouts as a freshman she eclipsed the half-century mark on three consecutive nine-hole rounds. Then, in one of her first competitive rounds, she shot an 85 at the Sandburg Invitational. It certainly didn't take her long to make a big impact and carve her place in the Trojans' program. "She's probably the best golfer we've ever had at Downers Grove North," coach Jackie McCormick said. "Her accomplishments and accolades …

Mixed Bag: Downers South Places Fifth, Downers North Sixth in WSC Girls Golf

Mahoney's strong finish paces Trojans with an 83; Schwartzers fires a round of 90 to top Mustangs.

The Downers Grove South and Downers Grove North girls golf teams finished right next to one another in the middle of the pack in Wednesday's West Suburban Conference meet at Village Greens The Mustangs finished 13 strokes ahead of the Trojans to take fifth place with a 383 team total, while the Trojans posted a 396 for sixth place. Liz Schwartzers led the Mustangs with a 90. She played her best golf on the back nine where she birdied No. 12 and went on to shoot 43. "I shot an 89 last weekend, so I've been around the 90 mark lately," Schwartzers said. "I was very happy with how I finished. I've always been a back-nine player." The rest of the girls from Downers Grove South delivered consistent rounds, except for Tiffany Boak who had a 20-…

Downers Grove South Beats North in Crosstown Boys Golf

Riedl and Trompeter lead Mustangs to 11-stroke victory at Downers Grove Golf Club.

Golf can punish the spirits of a player when he isn't playing well. But it also can be a beautiful thing when that same player is on top of his game. A couple of Downers Grove South boys were at their very best during Thursday's match against Downers Grove North at the Downers Grove Golf Club. Junior Jeremy Riedl fired a 1-over-par 37 to gain medalist honors, while fellow junior Mike Trompeter finished with a 40 to pace the Mustangs in a 160-171 victory. Riedl, who hadn't played the Downers Grove Golf Club since the beginning of summer, eagled hole No. 3, a 467-yard, par-5. "I hit a nice drive and was only 150 out and put a 9-iron about 22-feet away," Riedl said. "I hit a lot of good shots and kept my drives in play for good approaches." …

Downers Grove North Falls to Oak Park-River Forest on Links

Trojans showing signs of improvement with young boys golf squad and few key returnees back from last year.

The Downers Grove North boys golf team continued its rebuilding year, losing 172-157 to Oak Park-River Forest in West Suburban Silver play on Monday at the Oak Park Country Club. The Trojans are treating this season as a work in progress after graduating four golfers who advanced to sectionals last fall. On Monday, they didn't receive a particularly stellar round from any one of their eight golfers, with scores ranging from 42 to 50. "The talent is there, but the skill set isn't there yet to get the same scores day in and day out," Downers Grove North coach Jeff Naruszewicz said. "Someone will shoot a 38 one day, but then the 43s and 44s aren't going to beat anybody." Even if the Trojans played better on Monday, they would've had a …
