Parents and community members joined law enforcement officials at Downers Grove North on Thursday for a public discussion on the growing problem of heroin abuse in suburban Chicago.
Downers Grove residents Jim and Laurie have experienced first-hand the tragic, unforgiving effects of heroin, a drug they say will haunt them the rest of their lives. Earlier this year, their son died of a heroin overdose at the age of 24. He battled his addiction for nearly four years, but was never able to recover, even after stints in rehab. "This drug is powerful and it's deadly," Laurie said. "And for people who still don't believe it's in our community, we're here to tell them they're wrong." Jim and Laurie's son was one of four Downers Grove residents who died this year from heroin overdose. The Downers Grove Police Department will host a community panel discussion Thursday on the growing problem of heroin abuse in the village. The Downers Grove Police Department has moved the location of its upcoming heroin forum to accommodate growing community interest, according to village officials. "Heroin in Our Community" will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, at Downers Grove North High School (Purple Gym), 4436 Main St. The forum was previously scheduled to take place in the Village of Downers Grove Council Chambers. Parents, educators and young adults are invited to attend the forum, which was prompted by a dramatic increase in heroin abuse in DuPage County and Downers Grove, according to Deputy Police Chief Kurt Bluder. A dramatic increase in heroin abuse in DuPage County and Downers Grove has prompted the need for more community discussion, according to Downers Grove police. The Village of Downers Grove announced Monday that the police department will hold a public forum, "Heroin in Our Community," on Oct. 25, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Village Hall, 801 Burlington Ave. Downers Grove Deputy Police Chief Kurt Bluder said the forum was prompted by an increase in heroin use in the village and DuPage County as a whole.
