The family dog, Cinder, sits by the garage door sometimes waiting for the Ihde’s son, Hunter Himes, to come home. Hunter, 14, hasn’t returned since an SUV struck him Feb. 26 in Darien while he was riding his bike home from a friend’s house. The community continues to rally around Hunter Himes, the Lakeview Junior High eighth-grader critically injured when he was struck by a car while riding his bike in February. Hunter’s family is organizing a Hope for Hunter Golf Outing, which will take place August 16 at Carriage Greens Country Club in Darien. Funds raised during the event will help support the Downers Grove-area boy and his family as he continues his recovery at a nearby rehabilitation facility. Eight-year-old Concord student Hunter Long conceived the day to help bring awareness to an injured Lakeview student's recovery.
A sea of shiny orbs filled the gym classes Tuesday at Concord Elementary School. The kids wore their bike helmets to class so Darien Police Officer Nick Skweres could fit them properly while giving them a lesson on cycling safely. The safety tutorial was part of Hope for Hunter Day, an event sprung from the imagination of 8-year-old Hunter Long. After hearing about Hunter Himes, the Lakeview student struck by a car and critically injured while riding his bike in February, Hunter Long was compelled to do what he could to help the boy who shared his name. “All the Hunters in the world would be broken if one of the Hunters were hurt,” Hunter said. “They really want to do something for him because they feel really bad for him.” Skweres said…

Last week we mentioned Darien Patch's fundraiser for Hunter Himes, the eighth-grader who was hit by a car while riding his bike in February. This weekend, we learned of another fundraisier: Downers Grove resident Wayne Bancroft makes a card game, and he'd like the proceeds from the purchase of his game to help Hunter. So, stop by Fair Game in downtown Downers Grove and pick up Gridiron Football. The game should cost around $10.
