I-355 Resurfacing, Bridge Repair Work Postponed to May 13

Watch for a traffic shift on southbound I-355 the week of May 13 as roadwork begins.

Resurfacing and repair work on I-355 will begin the week of May 13, according to an Illinois Tollway press release.  The Illinois Tollway previously stated the work would begin May 2. The work was postponed "as advance work continues to prepare for the traffic shift." The Illinois Tollway will resurface three sections of I-355 between I-55 and Army Trail Road and repair 12 bridges in 2013. Resurfacing will start first and is expected to be finished in a month. The bridge work will be done by the end of the year. This is the final major repair work on I-355 until 2025. The Illinois Tollway will resurface three sections of I-355 between I-55 and Army Trail Road and repair 12 bridges in 2013. Resurfacing will start first and is expected to be finished in a month. The bridge work will be done by the end of the year. This is the final major repair work on I-355 until 2025. Bridges will be repaired and upgraded this year, as well as repairs on the ramp bridges at the I-355 and Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) Interchange and the Finley Road crossroad bridge over I-355.  The majority of resurfacing and bridge repair work will be done during off-peak hours. Theres a pork project, resurfacing a highway that was just built. If it needs resurfacing already, the contractor who built the highway should be held responsible. A new highway should come with a warranty. Otherwise, the builder can use the cheapest services and materials and not be held responsible.   more ›

Illinois Tollway Prepared to Mobilize 182 Snowplows for Tuesday's Snow, Sleet

All temporary lane closures have been canceled from 9 a.m. today through 7 a.m. Thursday.

The Illinois Tollway is preparing to mobilize its full fleet of 182 snowplows in response to sleet and snow that has already started and is expected to continue overnight into Wednesday around the Chicagoland area, according to a press release. “Our Snow Operations team is monitoring this storm closely and is prepared to manage snowfall throughout the day,” Kristi Lafleur, executive director, Illinois Tollway, said in a statement.  “We ask our customers to be patient, drive safely and give our snowplows the room they need to clear the roads, especially during this evening’s rush hour.”  Northern Illinois is expected to get 3 to 6 inches of snow from noon until 9 p.m. Some areas could see totals greater than 6 inches should thundersnow …

Tollway Steps Up Stranded Driver Patrols; Safety Tips Offered

The season's first blast of single-digit temperatures and subzero wind chills prompt warnings on what to do to be safe and during emergency situations.

As wind chills continue to hover around 0 degrees across Chicagoland, the Illinois Tollway is also stepping up efforts to keep drivers safe. Hourly patrols will be conducted around the clock to ensure that motorists who might be stranded get help as quickly as possible. The effort will continue until the wind chill temperatures rise above zero, according to a news release from the agency. According to the most recent forecast issued by the National Weather Service in Romeoville, the high Tuesday is predicted to be 22 degrees, with wind gusts as high as 20 mph bringing wind chill values down to 1. Illinois Tollway Now has a Webcam to Show Road Conditions

Illinois Tollway webcams let you glimpse road conditions before you walk out the door.

The Illinois Tollway has looped 15 traffic feeds into its website so you can see conditions on the main arteries around Chicago before you ever get on the road. According to the Illinois Tollway website, feeds from 15 traffic camera locations, including two on Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355), are now accessible to the public through the Tollway's homepage.   A bird's eye view of traffic conditions features three feeds on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90), eight on the Tri-State Tollway (I-94/I-294), and two on the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88). The Illinois Tollway has created accounts on Twitter, which will offer real-time information on incidents and traffic congestion.

Once upon a time tweeting was something only birds could do. Now, tweeting is the way to find out information and stay up to date on what is happening anywhere in the world. With the increased use of social media and cell/smart phones, the Illinois Tollway is taking to Twitter and tweeting to provide drivers with information for each of the four tollways, the Tri-State, Jane Adams Memorial, Reagan Memorial and Veterans Memorial tollways. 10 Million Drivers Expected on Illinois Tollways over Thanksgiving Weekend

The heaviest travel is expected Wednesday, when 1.7 million vehicles are projected to be on the road, according to tollway officials.

Drivers hitting the tollways in Illinois this Thanksgiving will not be alone, by any means. The Illinois Tollway expects 10 million drivers to be on the toll roads throughout the state between Monday, Nov. 19, and Sunday, Nov. 25. Wednesday is expected to be the busiest travel day, with 1.7 million drivers projected to be on the road. On an average day, about 1.4 million vehicles use the Tollway, officials said. "The Illinois Tollway is expected to be busier than usual this holiday season," said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur in a press release.
