North High School has a new associate principal for curriculum and a new assistant principal for student activities and programs, and both school has a new overseer of special education services for students with disabilities.
Community High School District 99 has appointed two current staff members and a former staffer to three new leadership positions within the District. Current staff members Janice Schwarze and Kristin Bormann will respectively become North High School’s associate principal for curriculum (Schwarze) and assistant principal for student activities and programs (Bormann), starting on July 1. The first homecoming social for Downers Grove South will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Moose Lodge. Food and beverages will be served during a live broadcast of the school's football game.
The District 99 Education Foundation will hold two homecoming socials in the coming days to celebrate the homecomings of both Downers Grove high schools. The events will be held at Friday, Sept. 28, for South's homecoming, and Friday, Oct. 5, for North. Both socials will run from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Downers Grove Moose Lodge, 1030 Warren Ave., where the schools' football games will be screened live. The socials will include pizza from Skuddlebutts, wings from Lemon Tree Grocer, popcorn from the Tivoli Theatre and a shuttle bus from the alumni tent to the Moose. Funeral services private but memorials to benefit Amrhein's children can still be made.
Funeral services for North High baseball coach and teacher Mike Amrhein were held in private by the family, but memorials in benefit of Amrhein's children can still be made. According to an obituary through Knollcrest Funeral Home in Lombard, memorials to benefit Amrhein's two daughters—Alexis (Ally) and Michaela (Ella) Amrhein—can be made at any 5/3rd Bank branch. Amrhein, who passed away at the age of 37 on July 5, worked in the Special Services department at North High for six years and was an assistant varsity baseball coach. Students needing support in wake of North High coach Mike Amrhein's passing are encouraged to come to North High Monday morning.
District 99 and North High school are inviting students who may need support in the wake of teacher and baseball coach Mike Amrhein's passing to come to North High on Monday morning. From 10 a.m. to Noon on Monday, July 9 in the North High Alumni Room, counselors will be available for students needing support. Amrhein worked in the Special Services department at North for six years and was an assistant varsity baseball coach. He passed away on July 5. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced by Amrhein's family.

Downers Grove North High School teacher and baseball coach Mike Amrhein died Thursday, according to an email sent by Principal Scott Kasik. Amrhein worked in the Special Services department at North for six years and was an assistant varsity baseball coach, according to a DGN Boosters Club website. "(He) was loved by all who knew him," Kasik said in his email. "… Please keep Mr. Amrhein’s family in your thoughts and prayers." Charity car wash and radio "Rock-A-Thon" to take place this Saturday, June 16.
If you're planning on washing your car this week wait until Saturday when students associated with the Downers Grove North radio station—WDGC 88.3 FM—will be holding a charity car wash to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The event, planned by radio students Alex Duta and Jordan Gustafson, will consist of a charity car wash from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a 16-hour long “Rock-A-Thon” radio show hosted by Duta, Gustafson and others. The “Rock-A-Thon” will go on the air at 8 a.m. and wrap up at Midnight. Duta and Gustafson came up with the idea out of a desire to promote the radio station and give back to the community. Choosing Make-A-Wish as the charity was an easy decision for Duta, who will be a sophomore in the Fall and hopes to pursue …

School officials request students wear flat-soled shoes to avoid damaging the synthetic football fields.
As graduation ceremonies for both schools are being held in the outdoor stadiums this year, school officials are kindly requesting that anyone planning on stepping onto the synthetic football fields avoid wearing high-heels. The request mainly applies to students, but all visitors should be aware that high-heels can damage the turf. Officials are requesting people wear flat-soled shoes instead. Other graduation notes: • Ceremonies for both schools will be held on Friday, June 1, with South High's ceremony at 5 p.m. and North High's at 7 p.m. • For South High, parking is available in the lots surrounding the school. In the event of a crisis that shortens the school year, D99 will be able to use various school holidays as attendance days to balance out the school calendar.
In case of emergency, cancel holidays. During its Monday night board meeting, the D99 board gave the district the power to do just that, unanimously approving a motion that would allow five different school holidays to be used as attendance days throughout the course of a school year. In rare instances, students could find themselves in class on Martin Luther King's Birthday, Abraham Lincoln's Birthday, Casimir Pulaski Day, Columbus Day and Veterans' Day going forward. Occasionally, in the past, Casimir Pulaski Day has been used as an attendance day to make up for snow days or other calendar imbalances.
