Village council voted to decrease number of holiday parking days by six.
What do Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, and Christopher Columbus have in common? You'll have to pay to park on their holidays now in Downers Grove. The village council voted Tuesday night in favor of an amendment that cuts down the number of village parking holidays from 14 to 8. Joining the three mentioned above are Washington's Birthday, Election Day and Veteran's Day. According to the proposed amendment, cutting the number of parking holidays is expected to generate approximately $10,000 in additional revenue for the Parking Fund. The holidays that made the cut and will parking holidays are New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, Christmas Eve and Day and the Fourth of July. Additionally, the …

Preliminary study reveals public parking often surpasses 85 percent capacity in downtown.
A preliminary parking report of downtown Downers Groves indicates parking is at a premium – something that is certainly not a revelation to residents. Representatives of Rich and Associates, a parking consulting firm hired by the village for $45,000, presented preliminary findings of a survey of public parking in the downtown business district and surrounding areas during Wednesday night’s Transportation and Parking Commission meeting. The parking consultants pinpointed several times and areas of downtown Downers Grove where public parking is at a premium. Firm hired by village council will present findings of 18-week study of parking situation in downtown Downers Grove.
After a summer of studying the parking situation in downtown Downers Grove, Rich and Associates, a firm tapped by village leaders, will present preliminary findings Wednesday night. A $45,000 contract with Rich and Associates, Inc. of Southfield, Mich. was approved by council on May 3. The study is examining available parking, where the demand is, how residents perceive downtown parking, long-term needs, and whether existing parking is being managed in the best way. As downtown Downers Grove has grown into a destination business area, parking has become a premium. Seems like we should only have to worry if we are at 101% of capacity, not 85%. I think the real problem is people in the suburbs don't like to walk even 2 or 3 blocks from the car to the destination.   more ›
