Downers Grove police reports, May 3-4
SATURDAY, MAY 4 Someone damaged three low-voltage yard lights in a front yard on the 500 block of 59th Street. The incident occurred sometime between 5 p.m. May 3 and 8 a.m. May 4. There were no leads or suspects. The lights cost a total of $75, according to a police report. Someone damaged parts of a wood picket fence that separates a resident's yard on the 2000 block of Aldrich from Woodward Avenue. The incident occurred sometime between 8 p.m. May 3 and 12:15 a.m. May 4. Police saw two six-foot sections of fence pushed in and torn from the fence posts. There was an estimated $50 in damaged and no suspects. FRIDAY, MAY 3 A 41-year-old Tinley Park man is headed to court after police say he tried to steal an HDMI extender worth about $60. …

MONDAY, AUG. 20 Raymond E. Lange, 61, of the 2200 bock of Jefferson Street in Joliet, was arrested near Katrine and Wisconsin, police said. He was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of cannabis, defective windshield and operating an uninsured vehicle. Thomas D. Kowalski, 51, of the 6200 block of Janes Avenue in Downers Grove, was arrested around 6:55 p.m. at Kohl's, 2920 Finley Road, Downers Grove police said. A loss prevention employee told police he was watching the floor when he saw Kowalski take a paper out of his pocket, grab a Bissell vacuum cleaner and walk out of the store. WEDNESDAY, AUG. 15 TUESDAY, AUG. 14 Robert J. Saul, 42, of the 6300 block of MacArthur in Woodridge, was arrested around 3:40 p.m. at Fry's Electronics, 3300 Finley Road, Downers Grove police said. The store's security cameras recorded Saul as he selected a Diff'rent Strokes DVD and placed his own UPC label and price tag on the packaging, police said. The value of the DVD was $21.99, while the UPC, which belonged to the DVD Human Centipede, had a value of $20.99, the report said. The DVD was purchased with the wrong UPC, and Saul was charged $20.99, police said. After passing the last point of sale, he was stopped by a loss prevention officer at Fry's, who handcuffed him and called police, according to the report. Saul was charged with one…

TUESDAY, AUG. 14 Joshua I. King, 21, of the 4000 block of West 172nd Place in Country Club Hills, was arrested around 12:25 a.m. at Ultra Foods, 1212 75th Street, Downers Grove police said. Store security said King walked out of the store with two bottles of vodka and two bottles of tequila in his backpack, police said. He was charged with retail theft. THURSDAY, AUG. 2 Sandeep Chawla, 32, of the 1400 block of Fairway Drive in Naperville, was arrested around 10:30 p.m. on the 1200 block of 75th Street, Downers Grove police said. He was charged with driving under the influence and given a Sept. 12 court date. A silver and red Trek mountain bike worth about $400 was stolen around 10:20 p.m. from outside the Downers Grove Public Library, police said. The victim told police he was walking around the building’s perimeter trying to connect his cell phone to the library’s Wi-Fi when the bike was taken. The woman walked into Bed Bath and Beyond empty-handed and left with a $279 coffeemaker—but no cash was exchanged, police said.
A woman left the Bed Bath and Beyond on Butterfield Road Wednesday with a coffeemaker that she tried to return. The problem: Downers Grove police said the item wasn’t hers to exchange. Police reviewed surveillance footage and saw the woman walk into the store around 5:20 p.m. carrying only her purse. Once inside, officers said the video showed her carrying the Breville YouBrew Coffee Maker, valued at $279, to the customer service counter. Bed Bath and Beyond staff said the woman asked if the counter was the only place to make returns. The woman told staff she couldn’t wait for them to finish working with the one customer ahead of her. Police said she then left the store with the coffeemaker. The woman is described as being 45-50 years old…
