Police: Woman Tried to Lure Young Boy Near Downers Grove Elementary School

Two young girls told police they saw a woman in a black SUV approach a boy while they were walking to school Wednesday morning.

Downers Grove police have increased patrols around local grade schools after a woman allegedly tried to lure a boy to her vehicle during his walk to school. Police said they were notified around 8 a.m. Wednesday of the incident, which occurred near Grant Street and Downers Drive. Two grade school age girls were walking to school behind a young boy when they saw a woman driving a black SUV slow down and ask him if he wanted candy or a ride, police said. The boy refused and continued walking, and the vehicle left the area in an unknown direction. The young boy involved in the incident has not been identified, police said. The driver of the vehicle could only be described by the girls as being a white woman. The SUV appeared to have a red …

Doors to Remain Locked in District 58 as Officials Consider Security Upgrades

A forum will be held with Downers Grove police and fire officials Feb. 6 to discuss extra security measures implemented after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The front doors to all school facilities in Downers Grove Grade School District 58 will remain locked as officials explore options for security upgrades in the coming months. Following the school shooting last month in Newtown, CT, which killed 20 children and six adults, District 58 immediately locked the front doors of each building and installed temporary doorbell systems that ring the school office to alert staff of a visitor. All front entrances were previously open and without a security guard. During the District 58 school board meeting Jan. 14, Superintendent Kari Cremascoli said the board has a list of security improvements to consider moving forward, including the installation of security cameras, intercom systems and a remote …

Locking doors and checking IDs and doing drills (students and first responders) is all pretty basic and should certainly be done. It could help slow down an attack or slightly discourage one. But in the end doesn't really reduce the chances of horrific violence very much. Duly noted that statistically speaking, the chances of being the kid in such a classroom that gets shot up is pretty small. …   more ›

Downers Grove District 58 Plans Safety Forum in Wake of Newtown Tragedy

A forum will be held with Downers Grove police and fire officials Feb. 6 to discuss extra security measures implemented after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Downers Grove Grade School District 58 will hold a public meeting next month to discuss the security measures implemented after the school shooting in Newtown, CT. The district will partner with Downers Grove police and fire departments for the presentation, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb 6 at Village Hall, 801 Burlington Ave. "Presenters will share an overview of the numerous safety and security measures in place in District 58 schools, as well as interagency partnerships and our future considerations," said Jennie Waldorf, communications director for District 58. Opportunities for feedback will be provided, Waldorf said. The meeting was prompted by the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which killed 20 children and six …

It's nice that the doors will not be locked at all times. However, shouldn't this have been the case always? Also, all this stuff seems a little over the top considering that the gunman in Newtown also encountered a locked school. Perhaps, these meetings should focus on mental health and violence in video games and movies. I know it sounds so cliche but these things really do matter. How about …   more ›

Worry and Fear Grips Schools and Parents in Wake of Newtown Shooting and Local Threats

Random and disturbing threats in the Chicago area followed the Newtown school killings, underscoring vulnerabilities and prompting discussions of gun control and guns for teachers.

The first day of school after the Sandy Hook school massacre brought a wave of fear, worry and outright threats to Chicago-area communities as educators and police sought to reassure people that efforts to protect their children would be redoubled. Parents and educators everywhere were talking about school security even as incidents locally in the last three days underscored potential vulnerability. Here's a glimpse of what's taken place in the past few days. A measured approach was taken in Plainfield, where District 202 officials and local police departments (Plainfield, Joliet and Will County) scheduled a review of security protocols and active-shooter response tactics. Meanwhile, there was a beefed-up police presence outside Plainfield …

All it takes is for kids to watch the news to feel unsafe. I fail to see the logic of having adults around to protect them is going to give them some type of inferiority complex. On the contrary, I believe it's our responsibility as adults, and as a community, to protect our kids and--yes--let them know that they are protected (as best we can). Armed guards are already fairly ubiquitous. Go to …   more ›

School administrators in Downers Grove have taken to their districts' websites to address Friday's tragic school shooting in Newtown, CT. District 58 already took a positive approach. Here is exerpt from an email sent out today to parents: Words cannot express how difficult the incident in Connecticut has been on our community and nation. I do want to take this chance to inform you all that all front doors at Herrick will now be locked. This is also true for the rest of the schools in District 58. Since we currently do not have a …   more ›
