Dr. Eric G. Jackson of Oral Health Care Professionals was recently named the team dentist for the professional fastpitch softball team.
A Downers Grove dentist has been tapped as the new team dentist for the Chicago Bandits professional softball team. Dr. Eric Jackson of Oral Health Care Professionals, 2033 Ogden Ave., will serve as the Bandits' official dentist for the 2013 season, providing both preventative care and treatment for injuries. "I'm ecstatic," Jackson said. "It's a fun opportunity to partner with a great organization. I'm look forward to a great season." Jackson said the Bandits reached out to him through social media to see if he was interested in the job. In the coming months, he'll begin fitting each player for custom mouth guards. "We're still ironing out the details, but I'll basically be there for whatever dental care they need throughout the 2013 …

From the Downers Grove Rebels: The Downers Grove REBELS completed a successful season in 2nd place with a record of 14-5 in the Southwest Suburban Softball League 12u A Division. But the real fireworks occurred during the season ending double elimination tournament. The REBELS made it to the championship game against the 1st place Lockport Prowl. The road leading to the finals was equally exciting with 2 come from behind victories against the Bolingbrook Fury and Naperville Diamonds to make it to the championship game. Reaching the finals, Harley Tom’s REBELS needed 2 victories against the highly talented Lockport Prowl. In the opening game, Lockport jumped out to a 5 run lead after the 1st inning. The REBELS “never say die” attitude …

From the Downers Grove Rebels: The Downers Grove DOLLS–Rebels Travel 10U squad has just completed the best regular season for a 10U team in the organizations history compiling a regular season record of 61 wins, 17 losses and 3 ties. The team has had far exceeded the expectations of the coaches to a point of amazement. “I knew we would be a solid team this year, but the drive and determination that these young ladies showed is something special," said Manager Fred Gusel. The core of this team came from last season's 9U team and they compiled a record of 36 wins and 6 losses. As 10U in 2012, the organization moved them up in classification and nearly doubled the schedule. “I can’t believe we played over 80 games this season but when …

The Redwings take New Trier 7-4 and tie the school record for wins, while senior pitcher Allyson Staats sets a new school mark for pitching wins.
EAST PEORIA – Benet Academy’s softball team has developed a reputation this season as being a group that refuses to give up, even if it is down in a game. It seemed only fitting that the Redwings overcame an early deficit to New Trier to capture third place in Class 4A at the East Side Centre in East Peoria Saturday. Down 2-0 through two innings, the Redwings came through with a four-run third to pave the way for a 7-4 win, tying the school record for wins in a season (31) in the process. “Our attitude has always been that we don’t quit,” Benet coach Jerry Schilf said. “We fell behind there. In a third place game, all of a sudden you can convince yourself that it’s a meaningless game. The kids didn’t do that. They battled.” Benet (31-11) …

Benet Academy 5, Downers South 0: Strong hitting and pitching from Allison Staats propel Redwings to sectional title.
The sectional final started on a bad omen for Downers South when starting pitcher Jen Belmont’s first pitch hit Maeve McGuire in the shoulder. It was a sign of things to come for the Mustangs (28-7) in their 5-0 sectional final loss to the Redwings (29-10). Belmont struggled with her control, hitting two batters in a third of an inning and giving up two runs on an RBI double from Allison Staats and a bases-loaded walk to Shellie Schaffer. Mustangs coach Ron Havelka pulled Belmont for Aleisha Bozek, who went on to strike out the next two hitters to stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, the psychological damage had already been done. “It really set the tone for us, I think,” Havelka said. “And it could have been a lot worse, that first …

Downers South senior four hits shy of surpassing Illinois mark.
See ball. Hit ball. The concept seems simple in theory but most softball players find it difficult to execute. Marissa Mersch makes it look like child’s play. The Downers Grove South senior and University of Wisconsin recruit has been a hitting machine throughout her illustrious four-year career and is on the cusp of breaking the state record for career hits. With 249 career safeties, Mersch is four shy of surpassing the Illinois record held by Kankakee’s Allie VadeBoncouer, who amassed 252 between 2007-2010. Mersch has swung, and made contact, better than anyone in school history. To put her achievements in perspective, the previous school record for career hits was 186, held by Lauren Meister and Brooke Andresen, both of whom were four-…

DGS softball team comes from behind as Nichols improves to 11-0 on the mound.
Coaches will often say they prefer stress-free blowouts, but even so, sometimes the wins that require a lot of scratching and clawing can be the most gratifying. Downers Grove South’s 4-3 defeat of visiting Oswego East in the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader left the Mustangs players and coaches very satisfied. The Wolves had threatened to hand Downers South pitcher Jennifer Nichols (11-0) her first defeat of the spring after scoring a run in the first inning and adding two more in the second for a 3-0 lead. But Nichols and her defense would not allow another run and the Mustangs’ bats eventually got going against Oswego East starter Morgan Ettinger. Shortstop Danielle Trezzo delivered the big blow, a 2-run homer over the wall in right …

Mustangs' long-time coach one of eight in Class 4A to be honored for his work in 2010.
The date—Feb. 28, 2011—is already etched in Ron Havelka's mind. That's the first day of tryouts for Downers Grove South softball players. But for Havelka, it's the first official day of what will be his 19th season coaching the Mustangs. And he'll be chomping at the bit for this day to arrive well before then. "I really get the itch (to coach) when the winter's around," he said. "As winter is coming to an end, you really want to kind of get going." However, a week before that first tryout date, Havelka will be attending the Illinois Coaches Association (ICA) Hall of Fame banquet in downstate Bloomington. There, he'll be recognized as a 2010 Coach of the Year in Class 4A. Havelka will be one of eight Class 4A coaches receiving the honor, …
