District 99 School Board Approves $70.3 Million Tax Levy

The approved extension is 4.9 percent higher than last year's request, which is necessary to cover new construction values, diminishing state aid and a potential shift in pension costs, officials said.

Community High School District 99 has set its proposed 2012-13 tax levy at $70.3 million, not including the bond and interest fund—a 4.9 percent hike over last year’s levy. The District 99 school board voted 6-1 during their Nov. 18 board meeting to approve the levy. Board Member Keith Matune cast the lone dissenting vote. Because this year's increase did not exceed the 2011 extension by more than 5 percent, the district was not required to hold a public hearing or publish levy information, according District 99 Controller Mark Staehlin. Despite the 4.9-percent increase requested by District 99, the amount of additional property tax revenue a district can receive from existing property is capped at 3 percent, the value set by the Consumer …

Just from an insiders point of view, DGN has lowered their standards from 4 years ago. DGN is making it easier for their students to get better grades. Students have certain opportunities to take tests over until they reach a "C". Mr Kasik has a goal to make minority students (who do not pay taxes in the District) feel more welcomed and get more understanding). These were his words to the staff …   more ›

Term Limits to be Put to DG Voters

The village council agrees to place the binding referendum on the April ballot.

Commissioner Sean Durkin did not arrive at Tuesday night's village council meeting in time to cast a vote on the resolution that would place a binding referendum on term limits on the April 2011 ballot, but it didn't matter. The resolution was passed by a 4-2 vote, with Mayor Ron Sandack joining Commissioners Bob Barnett, Geoff Neustadt and Marilyn Schnell in favor of the referendum. Commissioners Bruce Beckman and William Waldack voted against the resolution. The commissioners echoed many of the points that had been debated in previous meetings. Waldack said there's a difference between what voters want and what they ask for. "Term limits help make democracy a spectator sport." Sandack saw it differently. "The question isn't whether I …

Taxes and Term Limits Headline Village Council Meeting

Much has changed on the dais since the council last met on Nov. 16.

In a public hearing held in conjunction with Tuesday's village council meeting, several residents voiced concerns about the council's decision to raise property taxes for the second year in a row. It was the first time the council had met since Nov. 16—a three-week period that saw Mayor Ron Sandack appointed and sworn in to the Illinois Senate, Commissioner William Waldack file petitions as a mayoral candidate and Commissioner Bruce Beckman announce that he isn't running for re-election due to family considerations. "We're right there alongside our citizens in a general disdain over raising taxes," Sandack said, adding the village has become "a thinner, leaner organization" over the last three years. Sandack also reminded residents that …

Maybe they need to be a little more selective. When Luxury Motors started wanting big incentives without giving much back to our community, I and another citizen asked the Village at a TIF annual Review Meeting several years ago, who was the ownership group and where was the funding coming from. It was clear from the difficulty of getting good answers to that question, that all was not quite …   more ›
