Author Judy Blume will be in Downers Grove June 8 to celebrate the release of the movie released based on one of her books "Tiger Eyes." Learn more about the event, being held at the Tivoli Theatre.
For girls growing up during the 70s and 80s, Judy Blume was more than an author, through her coming of age books she tackled a variety of issues and offered her young readers an outlet and characters they could relate to almost as friends. Blume will be making an appearance at the Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove on June 8. Her appearance is tied with release of the first movie based on one of her books, Tiger Eyes. The appearance also coincides with the release of the tie-in edition of the book. It was first published more than 30 years ago in 1981, according to a news release from Anderson’s Bookshop. The special program will allow attendees to view a screening of the movie, which the author’s son Lawrence Blume directed. Following the…

Looking for the spirit of Halloween.
I hate Halloween. The whole cartoonish celebration of the supernatural does nothing for me. Maybe it’s the late October spot on the calendar, from which you can see the long, cold plunge into winter. Maybe it’s the memory of gorging on marshmallow circus peanuts after trick-or-treating and getting sick as a goat—not sure. About the only thing I look forward to in October is Shipyard Pumpkin Ale (available on tap this month at Lemon Tree). Other than that, I’ll be happy when it’s over. I have friends who are obsessed with Halloween. They host haunted bacchanals where everyone dresses as something "naughty" (usually involves fishnet) or "dirty," then spend the night drinking warm beer out of red solo cups and wondering why they bothered. …

A new documentary created by the Downers Grove Historical Society will guide residents through the first century of the village’s history. On a bleak and stormy afternoon, the historical society unveiled its video, “Images of the Past: 1832-1945,” at the venerable Tivoli Theatre, an appropriate site given its own long history in the village. The 30-minute production, narrated by Montrew Dunham, a former president of the historical society, takes viewers through more than a century of history. Using still photographs, Dunham explains how the village began as a small settlement founded in an oak grove along an Indian trail stretching from Fort Dearborn to the Naperville Settlement. The community started with a handful of people and grew to a…
