Veterans Day is Friday, Nov. 11, and with that, the U.S. Census Bureau compiled a list of stats that offer a glimpse into aspects of veterans’ lives. Three states with 1 million or more veterans in 2010. 14.1 percent of people 18 and older in Alaska were veterans in 2010. The percent of the 18 and older population were veterans was 12 percent or more in Maine, Montana, Virginia and Wyoming. Severity of one’s disability is scaled from 0 to 100 percent and eligibility for compensation depends on one’s rating. Students and staff paid tribute to more than 80 veterans and dozens of family members of U.S. service men and women Friday during the school's annual Veterans Day assembly.
Downers Grove North High School honored more than 80 veterans and dozens of family members of United States service men and women at its annual Veterans Day assembly Friday. During the program, students, faculty and guests heard from two local veterans, and paid tribute to those from Downers Grove who lost their lives during war. Among the guest speakers was Marine Sgt. Max Gilbert, a 2006 graduate of North High. He enlisted in the service in 2007, not long after his cousin, 24-year-old Marine Sgt. Thomas Gilbert, was killed while serving in Iraq. Sophomore classes visited with several service men and women Thursday in honor of Veterans Day.
Sophomores at Downers Grove South High School heard stories of patriotism and valor Thursday during the school's annual Veterans Day program. Every year, the school invites several United States military veterans to speak to students about their experiences in the service, and what Veterans Day means to them. Guest speakers included Army Lt. Col. Pat Roberts, Marine Johnnie Baylark (Vietnam), World War II soldiers Bill Howland and Ed Hoy, and Vietnam soldier Jack Aldworth. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - There are plenty of ways to keep up on Downers Grove news:

Patch talks to veterans in attendance at assembly.
Downers Grove North High School honored more than 80 veterans and dozens of family members of U.S. service men and women at its annual Veterans Day assembly Thursday. North High students and staff with loved ones deployed spoke to the challenges and sacrifices in a video played during the assembly. “You’re so used to having a dad,” one student said. “You realize how much you need him.” Students and staff can also take part in a letter and care package drive at North next week. You can donate hygiene items, clothing and entertainment. Letters and care packages will be sent to those serving around the world and those at Hines Hospital. Veterans who served in World War II, Korea, Cold War, Vietnam and recent conflicts will speak to students during the Downers Grove North event Thursday.
More than 80 area veterans, including those who served in World War II, Korea, Cold War, Vietnam and recent conflicts, will share their experiences with Downers North students on Thursday. It will be the eighth annual Veterans Day event for North. The veterans will participate in a school assembly and visit individual classrooms to share their experiences with students. Dan: my father, John Haine, also ended in the occupation forces in Japan. He found himself in Kure and Kamakura. For rest, he spent time at the Kawana Hotel in Ito. Just curious if your father-in-law happened to know any of the Aussies at that time.   more ›
