League of Women Voters Hosts Free Movie Screening on Women's Suffrage

"Iron-Jawed Angels" will be screened at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Downers Grove Public Library.

The League of Women Voters of Downers Grove/Woodridge/Lisle will host a free movie screening and discussion Saturday on the topic of women's suffrage. Iron-Jawed Angels will play at 9:30 a.m. at the Downers Grove Public Library, 1050 Curtiss St. The award-winning film tells the story of a group of young women who put their lives on the line in 1920 to fight for women's right to vote, according to League officials. Stars include Hilary Swank, Frances O'Connor, Angelica Huston, Julia Ormond and Patrick Dempsey. Light refreshments will be served, and a brief discussion will be held after the movie. Election Day is Nov. 6. Find out where you'll be voting.

Do you know where to go to vote on Election Day 2012? If not, you can use the handy Google Voter Info embed above to find the location of your designated polling place. Simply enter the address where you're registered to vote. This tool's data has been updated to reflect changes that may have been caused by Hurricane Sandy. Help the Downers Grove Public Library Win $5,000

Nominate the library through Lego's Read! Build! Play! initiative and the library could win $5,000.

You like the Downers Grove Public Library, right? Of course you do. Since you like the library so much, here's an opportunity for you to help the library win $5,000 for books and supplies. Through a Lego Duplo initiative, the top nominated library will win $5,000. The top 200 nominated libraries will receive a Lego Duplo toolkit, but let's not even think about that. We're going for the gold! As it stand right now, the Downers Grove Public Library sits at #1 as the top nominated library today. Let's keep it that way! League of Women Voters Celebrates 90 Years of Education and Advocacy

Local chapter focuses on issues, voter participation.

While the results of the 2010 Illinois Census have yet to be released, early indications indicate the state is poised to lose one, if not two seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. That development—and the redistricting that will result—was the focus of conversation at the Nov. 17 meeting of the Downers Grove, Woodridge and Lisle chapter of the League of Women Voters. It's the sort of discussion that has occupied the organization since its founding 90 years ago in Chicago with a mission to  "encourage informed and active participation in government, increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influence public policy through education and advocacy." Congratulations to the League of Women Voters for their 90 years of service to our communities! They do excellent work in a nonpartisan fashion. Unfortunately not all elected officials and candidates for reelection respect this group and their work.
