UPDATE: Freezing Rain Advisory in Effect for Sunday

Roads and sidewalks could become treacherous in the Downers Grove area, the forecast says.

A winter storm watch has given way to a freezing rain advisory for the Downers Grove area. The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. According to the National Weather Service, there is a slight chance of light freezing rain and sleet late in the morning and freezing rain early in the afternoon, with little or no sleep accumulation and ice accumulation of around one-tenth of an inch. Since pavement and soil temperatures are below freezing, any liquid precipitation will likely freeze on contact and result in icy and dangerous travel conditions. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by Sunday afternoon, with rain predicted by late afternoon and evening. Sidewalks and walkways could also become treacherous, according …

NWS: Winter Storm Watch in Effect for Downers Grove Area on Sunday

Up to a quarter-inch of ice could accumulate, the weather service said.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for Sunday, warning that "significant ice accumulations are possible Sunday into Sunday night." The watch area includes Cook, DuPage and Will counties. According to the NWS, freezing rain mixed with sleet will develop during the day Sunday and continue into Sunday night, with the potential for ice accumulation in excess of of a quarter of an inch.  The potential accummulation could make travel difficult, and ice forming on tree limbs and power lines could result in power outages, the NWS said.  A winter storm watch means there is a potential for icy weather. Winter Storm Watch Issued for Chicago Area; 2 to 6 Inches of Snow Expected

High winds and snow will develop late Thursday afternoon and carry into the evening hours, according to the National Weather Service.

The first snowstorm of the 2012-13 season is on its way.  The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch on Wednesday for much of the Chicago area, including DuPage County. The watch is in effect from Thursday evening through late Thursday night. Rain is expected to change to wet snow late Thursday afternoon through the evening, with strong winds developing and continuing through the night, according to the National Weather Service. Forecasters are predicting 2 to 6 inches of snow, with the higher amounts in the north and northwest suburbs. Winds will increase to 30 to 40 mph by late Thursday afternoon, and continue Thursday night with gusts up to 50 or 60 mph possible. The combination of snow and strong winds will result in …
