Police Force Entry, Make Arrests in Downers Apartment With Weed

An officer drew his gun on an unannounced man in the unit, according to a report. Here's what else happened.

Two men were arrested during an investigation of a Downers Grove apartment that reeked of marijuana and had a surveillance camera outside, according to police. Jermaine J. Barfield, 36, of the first block of Swinford Court, Bolingbrook, was charged with possession of cannabis under 30 grams. The apartment's lease holder, Timothy M. Hunt, 49, of the 6000 block of Ross Drive, Woodridge, was charged with attempted obstructing justice. Two Downers Grove detectives visited the apartment, located on the 2000 block of Prentiss Drive, at 2:57 p.m. May 6. They found out that Hunt changed the locks on his unit and installed a video camera outside a window, according to a police report. These were indicators of possible drug use, police said. No one …

Downers Grove police and firefighters were joined by village officials and Illinois State Police on Thursday for the annual Richard Barth memorial service.

Downers Grove officials held a memorial service Thursday in honor of Richard Barth, a village police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty 39 years ago. The ceremony, held at Patriots Park, 59th Street and Fairview Avenue, is put on each year in conjunction with National Police Week, an initiative that brings together between 25,000 to 40,000 attendees from departments throughout the United States and internationally to honor police officers who died while in the line of duty. Barth, Downers Grove's only fallen officer, was shot and killed on March 18, 1974. TUESDAY, MAY 14 Joseph M. Deir, of the 800 block of Franklin Street, Westmont, was arrested at 11:48 p.m. at the intersection of Ogden and Williams. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, according to police. His gray  Chevy Cruze was towed from the scene to an impound lot. Deir was released on I-bond and has a June 19 court date in Wheaton. SUNDAY, MAY 12 Angela A. National Police Week honors police officers who died in the line of duty and runs from May 12 through May 18. Barth, Downers Grove's only fallen officer, was shot and killed in 1974.

SUNDAY, MAY 5 A suspect might have used a couple's wooden storage shed as a hideout spot while police were looking for him, according to a report. Downers Grove police were in pursuit of the suspect on the 1500 block of Ogden Avenue at about 3:30 p.m. May 4, but could not find him. At 12:47 p.m. the next day, an officer responded to the 1500 block of Janet for a criminal damage to property report. The owner's shed door was hanging from its hinges when she returned home from church. The owner had been outside shortly before the May 4 foot pursuit. A man was spotted with a metal item resembling a gun near Herrick Middle School, police said.

A limo driver was temporarily detained by Downers Grove police while they checked out a report of a man with a gun. Officers at about 12:30 p.m. May 6 conducted a high-risk traffic stop of the driver's white Lincoln MKT limo on the 4500 block of Middaugh Avenue. The driver was cooperative as he exited the vehicle and was placed in the back of a squad car. Police searched the vehicle and found a disassembled airsoft gun in a bag behind the front passenger seat. Filing tools were located on the passenger seat. SATURDAY, MAY 4 Someone damaged three low-voltage yard lights in a front yard on the 500 block of 59th Street. The incident occurred sometime between 5 p.m. May 3 and 8 a.m. May 4. There were no leads or suspects. The lights cost a total of $75, according to a police report. Someone damaged parts of a wood picket fence that separates a resident's yard on the 2000 block of Aldrich from Woodward Avenue. The 40-year-old man's threats were heard by the neighbor's children, police said.

A 40-year-old Downers Grove man is headed to court after he threatened to kill one of his female condo neighbors, police said. Julius R. Isaac, of the 2400 block of Ogden Avenue, was charged with disorderly conduct, according to a police report. The incident occurred at 7:30 p.m. April 20 when Isaac was in the vestibule getting his mail. At that time the neighbor entered the condo building and he confronted her, according to a police report.
