South High Student Named 'Outstanding Participant' in National Achievement Scholarship Program

Senior Christian S. Siki is among 3,100 students in the National Achievement Scholarship Program who are being referred to U.S. colleges and universities.

Downers Grove South senior Christian S. Siki is among 3,100 “Outstanding Participants” in the National Achievement Scholarship Program who are being referred to U.S. colleges and universities, District 99 announced Tuesday. Siki scored in the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 Black American high school students who had requested consideration in the 2013 National Achievement Program when they took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). “Christian is an excellent student and we are proud of him and his many accomplishments,” said South High Principal Steve Bild. District 99 Education Foundation Hosts Homecoming Events for South, North High Schools

The first homecoming social for Downers Grove South will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Moose Lodge. Food and beverages will be served during a live broadcast of the school's football game.

The District 99 Education Foundation will hold two homecoming socials in the coming days to celebrate the homecomings of both Downers Grove high schools. The events will be held at Friday, Sept. 28, for South's homecoming, and Friday, Oct. 5, for North. Both socials will run from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Downers Grove Moose Lodge, 1030 Warren Ave., where the schools' football games will be screened live. The socials will include pizza from Skuddlebutts, wings from Lemon Tree Grocer, popcorn from the Tivoli Theatre and a shuttle bus from the alumni tent to the Moose.  The complete schedule for both schools' homecomings is as follows: Tickets for the Moose social are $25 and are limited; they may be ordered by sending an email to president@…

3 from DGS Basketball Program Named to Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame

Paul Runyon, Bryan Mullins, Jim Mizener and Jay Baum were all recently recognized.

Four big names, both past and present, in the Downers Grove South boys basketball program recently were recognized by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Former DGS Boys Basketball Varsity Coach Paul Runyon, former player Bryan Mullins and announcer Jim Mizener were recently inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Current DGS Boys Basketball Coach Jay Baum was also named 2012 the IBCA District 7 Basketball Coach of the Year.  Runyon, Mullins and Mizener were recognized in the 2012 "Hall of Fame" inductiong ceremony at Illinois State University April 28.  Paul Runyon  Paul Runyon spent 33 years coaching boys basketball in Illinois, 28 years at Downers Grove South, four at Rich South …

D99 Seniors: Don't Wear High-Heels at Graduation

School officials request students wear flat-soled shoes to avoid damaging the synthetic football fields.

As graduation ceremonies for both schools are being held in the outdoor stadiums this year, school officials are kindly requesting that anyone planning on stepping onto the synthetic football fields avoid wearing high-heels. The request mainly applies to students, but all visitors should be aware that high-heels can damage the turf. Officials are requesting people wear flat-soled shoes instead. Other graduation notes: • Ceremonies for both schools will be held on Friday, June 1, with South High's ceremony at 5 p.m. and North High's at 7 p.m. • For South High, parking is available in the lots surrounding the school. I've always wondered something. Why does South have the early graduation, and North have the late one? Have they ever thought of alternating, so that North has the late graduation in odd years, and early graduation in even years. Three DGS Boys Tennis Players Earn All-State Honors

The Downers Grove South boys tennis team earned 11th overall at the IHSA state meet last week.

Three of the six Downers Grove South boys tennis players who advanced to the IHSA state meet last week earned All-State Honors.  In singles, Joey Leto (41-5), senior captain, won three main draw matches and captured his third All-State selection in as many years. On the doubles court, Cody Freischlag (41-6), junior captain, and his senior partner captain Connor Harmon (41-6) also won three main draw matches as well. It was the third All-State selection for Freischlag and second for Harmon. All six players fought through a 128-player field in both singles and doubles.  The team finished 11th in the state as Junior Jon Artus (25-7), Senior Kiernan Cavanagh (27-14) and Freshman Tony Leto (21-7) all won one main draw match. DGS' Rebecca Stearns Takes 5th in State in 800-Meter Run

The Downers Grove South Girls Track and Field team tied for 45th place overall at the IHSA state meet.

The Downers Grove North and South girls track and field teams traveled to the IHSA state meet this weekend, tying for 46th and 50th places overall, respectively.  DGS Senior Rebecca Stearns took fifth in state in the 800-meter run with a time of 2.12.81. She set a school record in the preliminary round with a time of 2.11.80, breaking the 1990 record of 2.14.77 set by former 800-Meter State Champion Tina Sec.  Rebecca ran an aggressive race in the finals, holding on to third place for much of the race until being passed by two runners just before the finish line. Stearns will continue her track career next year at Loyola University.   The Downers Grove North 4x800-meter relay took sixth in state with a time of 9:17.71. Juniors Gabrielle …

D99 Board Approves Use of Holidays as Attendance Days

In the event of a crisis that shortens the school year, D99 will be able to use various school holidays as attendance days to balance out the school calendar.

In case of emergency, cancel holidays. During its Monday night board meeting, the D99 board gave the district the power to do just that, unanimously approving a motion that would allow five different school holidays to be used as attendance days throughout the course of a school year. In rare instances, students could find themselves in class on Martin Luther King's Birthday, Abraham Lincoln's Birthday, Casimir Pulaski Day, Columbus Day and Veterans' Day going forward. Occasionally, in the past, Casimir Pulaski Day has been used as an attendance day to make up for snow days or other calendar imbalances. Whiz Kid: Josue Augustin, 17 School: South High School Accomplishment: Ranked nationally in Le Grand Concours, the National French Contest of the American Association of Teachers of French Key to Awesomeness: Josue, known as Josh, took Le Grand Concours at the suggestion of his French teacher at South. He has been taking French since freshman year, and speaks a bit of French at home. “My mother speaks fluent French. She’s from Haiti,” he said. “My first language is English, but my mom will speak French around the house.”  The test included written, oral and listening comprehension. “It was extremely difficult,” Josue said. “It was annoying at how difficult it was.
