Village of Downers Grove Holds Rain Barrel Sale

Residents can purchase 55-gallon plastic barrels and rain barrel accessories to reduce flooding and take advantage of the village's storm water utility incentive program.

The village of Downers Grove will hold a rain barrel sale this spring for those interested in taking advantage of the storm water utility incentive program. Downers Grove has teamed up with the Naperville-based Conservation Foundation to offer 55-gallon rain barrels at a discounted price—$58.50, plus sales tax, for residents who pick up the barrel, and $63.50, plus sales tax, for home delivery. Rain barrels are large containers that capture rainwater at the end of a downspout and store the water for later use, for example in watering plants or washing cars. Using water from rain barrels lowers water bills, helps reduce flooding, and can have a dramatic impact on water quality in rivers and streams, according to village officials. The …

Wow, $25 one time credit! How generous DG. It should be more like $25 per year! I thought the village was all about customer service these days? I would urge commissioners to look into a simpler and more customer friendly storm water credit system. The paperwork is very difficult.   more ›

Price of Garbage Stickers Increases in Downers Grove

Beginning Monday, the cost of garbage stickers went from $3.37 to $3.52.

Trash will now cost slightly more for Downers Grove residents. Beginning Monday, the price of garbage stickers increased from $3.37 to $3.52. The price of carts also went up: The increases are part of the village's contract with its waste management company, Republic Services. There will be no change in the appearance or color of the stickers. Stickers purchased before April 1 will be accepted on garbage/yard waste.  The contract with Republic Services also includes an amnesty day for unlimited trash pickup, which is scheduled for the week of Sept. 30 on regular pickup days. I wouldn't mnd the increase if it would DEcrease the amount of garbage that flies out of the truck when they dump it. I can always tell when it was garbage day - my lawn is littered with pieces of trash.   more ›

Village of Downers Grove to Host Storm Water Workshop for Businesses

The free event will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the Lincoln Center auditorium.

The village of Downers Grove, in cooperation with the Naperville-based Conservation Foundation, will host a free workshop Wednesday to educate businesses and non-profits on water conservation strategies and storm water management. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Lincoln Center auditorium, 935 Maple Ave. Participating vendors will be on hand to provide services and answer questions related to the village's Stormwater Utility Credit Program, such as water quality and how to reduce a site's run-off rate and volume. Downers Grove Firefighters Announce Village Council Endorsements

The Downers Grove Professional Firefighters Association has thrown their support behind incumbents Bob Barnett and Marilyn Schnell and newcomer Greg Hosé.

The Downers Grove Professional Firefighters Association (DGPFFA) earlier this month announced its endorsement of village council candidates Bob Barnett, Marilyn Schnell and Greg Hosé. All six council candidates completed a questionnaire from the DGPFFA, and were subsequently interviewed by the organization's Political Education Committee. “We selected the candidates we felt expressed the best vision for continuing to provide the high level of public safety service the citizens of Downers Grove have come to expect," DGPFFA President Rob Pekelder said in a press release. Village of Downers Grove Among Early Voting Locations for April 9 Election

Village Hall is one of nine sites designated for early voting March 25 through April 6.

Early voting for the April 9 consolidated election began Monday at Downers Grove Village Hall, 801 Burlington Ave., and several other area locations. All voters registered in DuPage County may vote early at any of the nine designated polling places, now through April 6. Voters must bring a government-issued photo ID such as a passport, driver's license or military ID. Voting will be conducted on ATM-like touch screens, according to the DuPage County Election Commission. Two forums will be held in the coming week for the six candidates running for Downers Grove Village Council.

Downers Grove Council OKs Police, Staff Raises Despite Objections

The council voted Tuesday to approve salary increases for Downers Grove police, as well as the village manager and attorney.

Downers Grove officials approved salary increases for police and two senior employees Tuesday, despite objections over the village's compensation policies. The village council voted 4-3 to approve a 2-percent raise and a $10,000 bonus for Village Manager Dave Fieldman, bringing his annual salary from $160,000 to $163,200. Commissioners voted 5-2 to approve a 3-percent raise for Village Attorney Enza Petrarca that brings her annual compensation to about $128,000, according to village records. The measures extend severance pay for both employees—Fieldman by three months and Petrarca by six. Downers Grove Council to Consider Employee Pay Raises, Police Contract

The Downers Grove Village Council is set to consider salary increases for two village employees, as well as a new labor agreement with the local police union. The council will vote Tuesday night on amended employment agreements with Village Manager Dave Fieldman and Village Attorney Enza Petrarca that would give them both raises and extend their severance pay if either should be terminated without cause. Fieldman is up for a 2-percent raise, bringing his annual salary from $160,000 to $163,200. He is also set to receive a $10,000 bonus for his performance in 2012, according to village documents. I don't see why the village should keep giving raises to the same people when others like the school crossing guards haven't had one in over 5 years.The village even threatened them with replacement by using Andy Fraine ushers.   more ›
