Downers Grove Gas Station Caught in Tobacco Compliance Check

Downers Grove’s BP Gas and Food (2231 Maple Ave.) was one of two DuPage County businesses to flunk their 2013 tobacco compliance check after selling to an teen under 18 years old, DuPage County Sheriff John E. Zaruba announced on Tuesday.

According to the Sheriff’s office, a BP Gas and Food cashier sold cigarettes to the underage compliance checker on May 17th and received an ordinance citation that can result in a $200 fine.

Only two of 41 DuPage businesses tested in the last of three rounds of compliance checks flunked—the other was Wings Auto Repair in Glen Ellyn.

“I am pleased with the level of compliance achieved during this final round of tobacco compliance checks,” Zaruba said in a press release. “Through education and enforcement, we strive for retailers to be in 100% compliance with the law in an effort to reduce our children's access to tobacco products.”

The compliance checks are operated via a grant from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission.
